Demystified terms

These are some terms that are defined simply for students.

Internet

The global communication network that allows almost all computers to connect and exchange information.

World Wide Web

An informative system on the internet that allows documents to be connected to other documents by hypertext to search for links enabling the user information.

Hyperlink

From one document to another; a link from a hypertext file or document to another location or file, typically activated by clicking on a highlighted word or image.

WYSIWYG

Short for what you see is what you get. A WYSIWYG app is one that enables to see on the display screen exactly what will appear, when the document is printed.

Website

A location connected to the internet that maintains one or more pages on the world wide web.

Webpage

A hypertext document connected to the world wide web.

Web Browser

A software application for retrieving or presenting information resources on the world wide web.

HTML

A hypertext mark-up language, a standardized system for tagging text files to retrieve font, color, graphic and hyperlink effects.

IP Address

A code that identifies a computer network or a particular computer or other device on a network, consisting of four numbers separated by periods.

Modem

Electronic device that makes possible the transmission of data to or from a computer via telephone on other communication lines.

ISP

Company that provides individuals and other companies access to the internet and other related services such as a website.

Router

Device that forwards data packets along networks and has an IP address

Archive:

a collection of historical documents or records providing information about a place, institution, or group of people.

Browser:

a program with a graphical user interface for displaying HTML files, used to navigate the World Wide Web.

Domain name:

the part of a network address that identifies it as belonging to a particular domain

FAQ:

a list of questions and answers relating to a particular subject, especially one giving basic information for users of a website

Upload:

transfer (data) from one computer to another, typically to one that is larger or remote from the user or functioning as a server

IP address:

a unique string of numbers separated by periods that identifies each computer using the Internet Protocol to communicate over a network.

Search Engine:

a program that searches for and identifies items in a database that correspond to keywords or characters specified by the user, used especially for finding particular sites on the World Wide Web.

Download:

copy (data) from one computer system to another, typically over the Internet.

Server:

A computer or computer program that manages access to a centralized resource or service in a network.

WWW:

The World Wide Web.

Home page:

the introductory page of a website, typically serving as a table of contents for the site.

HTML:

Hypertext Markup Language, a standardized system for tagging text files to achieve font, color, graphic, and hyperlink effects on World Wide Web pages.

Database:

A structured set of data held in a computer, especially one that is accessible in various ways.

Bookmark:

Record the address of (a website, file, etc.) to enable quick access in the future.

Cookie:

A packet of data sent by an Internet server to a browser, which is returned by the browser each time it subsequently accesses the same server, used to identify the user or track their access to the server.

DNS:

domain name system

Cloud Storage:

Cloud storage is a model of data storage in which the digital data is stored in logical pools, the physical storage spans multiple servers (and often locations), and the physical environment is typically owned and managed by a hosting company.

Blog:

A regularly updated website or web page , typically one run by an individual or small group, that is written in an informal or conversational style.

Wiki:

A website that allows collaborative editing of its contents and structure by its users.

Post:

Submit (a message, link, image, etc.) to an online location, such as a blog, social media website, or forum.

Tag:

A character or set of characters appended to or enclosing a piece of text or data in order to identify or categorize it.

Keyword:

a word or concept of great significance.

Transparency:

An image, text, or positive transparent photograph printed on transparent plastic or glass able to be viewed using a projector.

Forum:

Avatar:

An icon or figure representing a particular person in computer games, internet forms, etc.

Share:

a part or portion of a larger amount that is divided among a number of people

Comments:

Place a piece of specially tagged explanatory text within (a program) to assist other users.
